A swingback step ladder is the classic ‘A-frame’ style of stepladder. One side of the frame is fitted with treads which can be climbed, while the other side of the ladder ‘swings’ out, locks in place and supports you whilst you climb. These ladders are great for carrying out fast, repetitive work at a height as they can be quickly taken down, moved and erected again.
No, as per HSE guidelines on the safe use of stepladders, you must not stand on any of the top three rungs of a swingback step ladder. This is important to factor in when deciding on the size of step ladder you require.
No, you must not climb a step ladder whilst it is leaning against a wall. Step ladders are designed to support you securely in their own right whilst erected. They are not designed to be leant up against a wall in the same way as an extension ladder. No piece of equipment should be used in a way other than its intended purpose – a step ladder may slip if it is leaned up against a wall and climbed.
Yes, the tread count on a swingback step ladder included the top tread. Though, please note that you must not stand on the top three treads.
